구동사(句動詞)
(1) 자동사적 구동사(Intransitive phrasal verb)
(2) 전치사 수반동사(Prepositional verb)
(3) 타동사적 구동사(Transitive phrasal verb)
(4) 구 전치사 수반동사(Phrasal prepositional verb)
(1) 자동사적 구동사(Intransitive phrasal verb):
1) 「동사와 전치사적 부사」가 합쳐서 자동사와 비슷한 기능을 가지는 동사구를 말하며 대개 액센트는 부사적 소사(小辭: particle)에 있다. . ex) He turned up unexpectedly.
2) 대표적인 particle로는 about, across, along, around, aside, away, back, by, down, in, off, on, over, through, under, up등이 있다.
3) 다음의 particle은 전치사를 만들 수 있다. ex) They moved out of the house.
(2) 전치사 수반동사(Prepositional verb)
1) 겉으로 보기에는 똑같은 「동사+전치사+명사」의 형식이지만 「전치사 수반동사+명사」는 대부분의 경우 수동태를 만들 수 있다는 점에서 「동사+전치사+목적어」구문과는 다르다. ex) He looked at the girlThe girl was looked at. cf.) He stood near the girlThe girl was stood near.( )
2) 전치사 수반동사는 타동사적 구동사와 달리 어순상 목적어를 동사와 전치사의 중간에 위치시킬 수 없다. ex) They called on the man.They called the man on.( ) cf.) They called up the man.They called the man up.
3) 전치사 수반동사는 부사를 동사와 전치사 사이에 삽입시킬 수도 있고, 관계사절이 전치사 다음에 올 수도 있다. ex1) They called early on the man. cf.) They called early up the man.( ) ex2) the man on whom they called cf.) the man up whom they called( )
4) 전치사 수반동사의 전치사에는 대개 at, to, of, for, from이 있고, live on, depend on, call on, look into, believe in, deal with, part with, write about 등이 있다.
5) 전치사 수반동사는 전치사에 관계없이 동사의 의미가 남아있으므로 동사에 액센트가 있다.
(3) 타동사적 구동사(Transitive phrasal verb)
1) 「동사+particle」이 합쳐서 타동사와 비슷한 기능을 가지는 동사구를 말한다. ex) I can't make out what he means.
2) 대부분의 타동사적 구동사는 어순상 목적어를 동사와 particle사이에 끼워 넣을 수 있다. ex) They turned on the light.They turned the light on.
3) 목적어가 대명사인 경우에는 반드시 목적어가 particle앞에 와야 한다. ex) They turned it on.They turned on it.( )
(4) 구 전치사 수반동사(Phrasal prepositional verb)
1) 「동사+particle+전치사」가 합쳐져 하나의 타동사의 구실을 하므로 전치사 다음에 오는 명사가 목적어가 된다. 타동사와 목적어 사이에는 부사가 위치할 수 없으므로 다음과 같은 문장은 비문법적이다. ex) We look forward to eagerly your visit.( )
2) 전치사 앞에는 부사가 올 수 있으므로 다음 문법은 문장에 맞는다. ex) We look forward eagerly to your visit.
3) 구 전치사 수반동사는 put up with(=tolerate), stay away from(=avoid), stand up for(=support)
